Sexual Puritans in an R-Rated Culture

Posted by on Dec 2, 2015 in America, Culture, Culture War, Dan Savage, Homepage, Homosexuality, Pop Culture, Power, Sex | 2 comments

As you probably know, Christian and I interviewed Dan Savage on our most recent episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors. For those not familiar, Dan is  a gay-rights activist as well as the nation’s most well-known sex-advice columnist. Going in, we pretty much knew that the episode would make some people uncomfortable. We were right. I won’t spoil it for you, but suffice it to say that our conversation focused on sex in general and homosexuality in particular, and it featured just about everything you can imagine a discussion like that including. And true to form, some of our more conservative and Christian listeners disapproved. In a word, they thought it was distasteful and icky. Here’s the irony: Many corners of the Christian church have leaders who clamor for relevance, for a seat at the cultural table, and for a chance...

Careful What You’re Thankful For

Posted by on Nov 26, 2015 in America, Football, God, Homepage, Humanity, Love, Protest, Thanksgiving | 2 comments

Like many of you, I will be spending the day with friends, family, and people I love. I’ll be eating turkey, having some good slash awkward conversations with plenty of eye-rolling, and watching a guy run the ball up the middle for a loss of yardage instead of just going around the defenders like he should’ve done.  Like many of you, I have a lot for which to be thankful. And like almost all of you, my giving-of-thanks should be mingled with a touch of grief, especially insofar as what I am thankful for falls under the rubric of The American Dream. To come at this by way of illustration, is it right for the child of a jewel thief to thank God for his Xbox? Sure, he may believe that it is God who is the ultimate Source...

Bang Bang, You’re Dead

Posted by on Jun 23, 2015 in America, Culture War, Guns, Homepage, Politics | 2 comments

I was having dinner with some friends a couple nights ago, and the issue of guns came up. In such situations I often insist (jokingly, with tongue in cheek) that I just wish Obama would burst through our doors with a battering ram and personally confiscate all our guns so that we’d finally be safe. Once my conversation partner’s hyperventilating has subsided, we can usually have a pretty healthy discussion. The point I made that night, which I also made on episode #49 the Drunk Ex-Pastors podcast, is that we simply don’t get to be “the gun country” on the one hand and lament mass shootings on the other. To be more clear, while those who favor serious and strict firearm regulations can genuinely grieve over schools and churches being shot up and their inhabitants killed, when hardcore NRA-...

Lucifer in 2016!

During a recent episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors  I made the point that I would welcome a presidential candidate who made no claims to being religious, since then I might actually have someone I’d consider voting for.  Think about it: If a candidate is an outspoken Christian he will almost certainly: (1) desire to defund as many state programs for the poor as possible; (2) turn away as many destitute people from our borders as he can, children included; (3) need the slimmest of reasons necessary before engaging in military action, action which will probably have some ulterior motive beyond the stated one; (4) fight against raising the minimum wage; (5) seek to deregulate corporations’ freedom to do whatever they want since they’re “people”; (6) deny climate change since it snowed this winter; (7) fight against reasonable gun legislation; and (8)...

Worldviews Weighed and Wanting

Posted by on Mar 6, 2015 in America, Catholic Church, Culture War, Homepage, Politics, Worldviews | 2 comments

It seems to me that there are certain moments in life when a person needs to ask, “If my worldview is turning me into this  kind of person, maybe I need to step back and rethink things?” Whether we’re talking about issues political, cultural, or religious, the fact remains that many people need to take their metaphorical temperature much more often than they do. I do a radio show on Thursdays, and yesterday my co-host and I were discussing the recent statement put out by four Catholic publications — publications that are diametrically opposed to one another politically — that called for the abolishment of the death penalty. Unsurprisingly, the reaction on the part of the readers of the more conservative papers was one of alarm and dismay: “How can we get rid of the death penalty? It’s so awesome!” (One...

Racism: For Whites Only?

Posted by on Sep 26, 2014 in America, Culture War, Homepage, Power, Protest, Questioning Authority, Racism | 14 comments

In Drunk Ex-Pastors podcast #8, one of the topics we discuss is racism. Jason brings up a quote from the first season of MTV’s The Real World  where Kevin Powell (a black cast member) is accused of racism and in response says, “Black people cannot be racist. We don’t have the power to control. . . .” At first hearing, I dismissed Kevin’s statement as ignorant. After all, racism, to me (a white male), means considering someone to be inferior in some way simply because of their race. While this is a  valid definition of racism, it’s not the only  definition of racism and not even the main  definition. A quick search through the various definitions of racism will show that racism also  has to do with the exercise of power. The first definition for “racism” on is...

Podcast #7: Scary Movies, Dead Americans, and Mark Driscoll’s Penis

Posted by on Sep 17, 2014 in America, Homepage, Humor, Isis, Mark Driscoll, Movies, Podcasts, Pop Culture, Porn, Sex, Technology, TV, Women | 0 comments

Episode #7 of Drunk Ex-Pastors is now available to download or stream. In this installment, I explain why I don’t like movies containing red-headed twin children or the Holocaust; Christian reveals some sobering facts about ISIS and their plot to take over America (or just kill us all, we’re not sure at this point); we take some listener feedback asking about Mark Driscoll’s penis and who it really  belongs to; and lastly, Christian complains about the insensitivity of certain drivers’ parking habits, while I lament all progress in general. Listen to Podcast #7: Scary Movies, Dead Americans, and Mark Driscoll’s...

Say Hello to My Little Friend!

Posted by on Sep 12, 2014 in America, Culture War, Guns, Homepage | 0 comments

It’s a fact that America has more guns per 100 people (88.8) than any other developed nation. It’s no surprise then that America also has more gun deaths per 100,000 people (10.2) than any other developed nation. Coming in second is Switzerland with 45.7 guns per 100 people and 3.84 deaths per 100,000 people. I find it interesting that while we have less than twice as many guns per 100 people, we have 2.5 times more deaths per 100,000. In other words, not only do we have more guns, but we kill more people with them! (Twenty times more than the average of other developed nations, to be exact!) Go ‘Merica! Number one! These numbers are taken from  ABC News and it also went on to say, “that the U.S. has 88 guns per 100 people and 10 gun-related...

Does ISIS Speak for True Islam?

Posted by on Sep 11, 2014 in America, Culture War, God, Homepage, Isis, Politics, Power | 3 comments

The latest episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors  deals in part, again, with the issue of ISIS (you can click below to hear our full discussion).  I just read a very interesting article by Sam Harris called “Sleepwalking Toward Armageddon” in which the author argues a few controversial points, among which are (1) the idea that as long as the West is invoking the “true religion” to combat Islam’s false one, we’ll have no choice but to also and forever combat our enemies with missiles as well, and (2) those who deny that ideas like martyrdom, armed jihad, and hatred of infidels are central tenets of the Koran are as misguided as those who would say that the resurrection of Christ is some secondary or tertiary doctrine of Christianity. I would highly recommend the article, it is quite thought-provoking. For my part,...

Podcast #5

Posted by on Sep 7, 2014 in America, Culture War, Drugs, Duck Dynasty, Guns, Homepage, Humor, Isis, Moderation, Podcasts | 1 comment

Episode #5 of Drunk Ex-Pastors  is now available to download and stream. We keep our promise to do a shot in honor of all those who shared our podcast on social media this past week, and go on to extol the many benefits of alcohol, and how the moderate enjoyment of various libations can help (in the immortal words of Pink) “get this party started.” We also take some listener feedback and discuss issues like gun control, ISIS, and why I hate animals. God, I’m just a horrible, horrible person. . . ....
