Careful What You’re Thankful For

Like many of you, I will be spending the day with friends, family, and people I love. I’ll be eating turkey, having some good slash awkward conversations with plenty of eye-rolling, and watching a guy run the ball up the middle for a loss of yardage instead of just going around the defenders like he should’ve done.  Like many of you, I have a lot for which to be thankful. And like almost all of you, my giving-of-thanks should be mingled with a touch of grief, especially insofar as what I am thankful for falls under the rubric of The American Dream. To come at this by way of illustration, is it right for the child of a jewel thief to thank God for his Xbox? Sure, he may believe that it is God who is the ultimate Source...

In this episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors, Jason presents Christian with a gift that he needs but will never use; the discussion turns to whether or not the police force attracts people who were picked on in school and therefore need to take out their frustrations on the powerless and weak; we discuss the recent controversy surrounding the lawsuit against our former church, Calvary Chapel, by two of its now-deceased founding pastor’s children; we answer a Twitter follower’s question about whether Jesus and Paul thought hell was a real place of eternal torment; and lastly, Jason exhibits his laser-sharp understanding of how to win at football (besides just shooting lots of homeruns, which is obvious). Listen to Podcast #9: Cops, Calvary Chapel, Hell, and...

Ethnocentrism Goes Better with Coke!

Posted by on Feb 11, 2014 in Coke, Culture War, Football, Homepage, Humor, Jason, Pop Culture | 6 comments

As many of you will be aware, Coca Cola aired what turned out to be a rather controversial commercial during the Super Bowl a couple weekends ago. Now if you had been informed beforehand about an upcoming controversial Coke ad, you probably would have thought, “Oooh, so what’s the scandal? Scantily-clad women drinking Coke? Super gnarly violence followed by people drinking Coke? Gay midget conjoined twins drinking Coke?” Hmmph. If only. If only this ad were as tame as those things, but sorry, no such luck. I long wistfully for the day when I can once again live in an America where queer Siamese dwarfs were the worst thing I’d have to see during a football game, but alas, we as a culture have sunk to a whole new low. If you’ve got the stomach for it, have a...

Pot-Smoking Beats Homosexuality!

According to a recent study whose conclusions were literally just reached on Sunday at around 7pm, there are more devoutly religious people in Seattle than in San Francisco. Such a finding is startling at first blush since Seattle is such a hyper left-leaning city, and everyone knows that the only non-Republicans who can possibly be said to love God are the even more right-wing Tea Partiers (and Seattle has, like, a total of seven of them). But then when you consider the fact that San Francisco is 87% gay — and if anyone despises the Man Upstairs more than normal Lefties it’s the abnormal (gay) ones — then the findings actually make a lot of sense. But how was such a conclusion reached? Through extensive polling? By evaluation  of technical census data? Pish posh. Who needs all that sociology mumbo-jumbo?...
